A look back at the 2023/24 season

As we start looking forward to the Southsea Badminton Club AGM and the 2024/2025 season, we thought we’d reflect on the highs and lows of the 2023/2024 season.

The season in numbers

We had a massive 26 members show up and represent Southsea Badminton Club across all disciplines.

A whopping 450 games were fought over the year during SBC’s 35 scheduled matches, spread across 7 different venues across Hampshire.

How our teams fared

Our five badminton teams had a standout season, delivering impressive performances across all divisions

SBC Open 1 continued their reign of dominance by winning the Open 2 division. With a stellar record of 7 wins out of 8 matches, the team’s success was largely attributed to the exceptional performances of Johnny Malynn, Danielle Todd, and Gillian Tetlow. This impressive achievement ensures their promotion to the Open 1 division for the upcoming season.

SBC Open 2 faced formidable opponents throughout the season, including their own club’s Open 1 team. Despite the challenges, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience and sportsmanship. Darren Reynolds, Matt Hill, and Diwaker Redhu played pivotal roles in the team’s efforts. Although the results may not have always reflected their hard work, the team’s unwavering spirit and dedication are truly commendable.

SBC Mixed 1 successfully defended their title as Mixed division champions. The team’s dominance was evident in their impressive record, with only 16 games dropped across all matches. Hayley Cook, Gillian Tetlow, Owen Devine, and Johnny Malynn were instrumental in securing this victory.

SBC Mixed 2 faced a steep learning curve as many team members were new to the league. However, they rose to the challenge and fought valiantly against tough opponents. Amy Claydon, Matt Hill, and Kira Payne played key roles in the team’s development. Despite the challenges, the team gained invaluable experience and emerged from the season feeling proud of their accomplishments.

SBC Women delivered a strong performance throughout the season, finishing in second place in the Ladies Division. The team’s success was driven by the exceptional skills of Gillian Tetlow, Danielle Todd, and Gill Gould.

A shout out to our awesome captains

A special thanks must go to Amy Claydon, Darren Reynolds, Danielle Todd, and Johnny Malynn, the dedicated team captains who played an instrumental role in the success of their respective teams. Their unwavering support, guidance, and determination were invaluable assets to the club. Without their leadership, the teams would not have achieved such remarkable results.
