SBC Membership returns and AGM 2022

Southsea Badminton Club Membership

We originally launched membership in 2019. It quickly became a popular way for players to get more involved and support our community club.

Now we’re back up and running after Covid, we’re relaunching a membership option. These memberships will be available for the year starting 1 September 2022.

What membership involves

This year’s membership will cost only £6 – the same price as a club night session. It’ll give you benefits such as:

  • priority booking on selected events, including socials and select club nights;
  • eligibility to represent the club within the local league (membership covers your league fees should you be chosen to play, but doesn’t guarantee a position in the squads)
  • eligibility to attend and vote at our AGM – more details below
  • eligibility to to run for a committee position at our AGM
  • officially supporting your community club;
  • other perks during the year

Become a member

You can become a member by either:

  1. Booking a ticket to our Annual General Meeting, which includes membership for the year 2022/23
  2. Adding membership to your club night booking in September – this will be available as an add-on on Eventbrite from Tuesday 6 September, after our AGM.
  3. Buying membership online before competing in the league for SBC – your team Captain will be able to share details with you

Our AGM – Tuesday 6 September 2022

Each year, Southsea Badminton Club hosts an Annual General Meeting, or ‘AGM’. This is a formal event, where the membership has its say on how the club is run. We want to hear what members like, what they don’t like – and they have the chance to vote to change things.

This year’s AGM will take place:

Tuesday 6 September, 7.00pm – 9.00pm

Southsea Village, 81 Palmerston Rd, Southsea, PO5 3PP

We’ve reserved the ‘Village Hall’, the back room of the Southsea Village pub, where we’ve previously held our AGMs. You’ll also receive a free pizza buffet within the ticket price.

The cost to attend is £6, which includes food, and will make you an SBC member by default.

What happens at the AGM?

The committee will present their reports on what has happened since the last AGM and take questions from members. They’ll then ask the membership to vote upon the revised constitution for ratification.

The membership elects the incoming 2022/23 committee, and ratifies any changes to the constitution by which the club is governed.

Electing a new committee for 2022/23

Then the elections for each role on the committee will take place. The following positions will be available for the membership to nominate themselves to stand for election:

  • Chair
  • Secretary and Membership Officer (deputy to the Chair)
  • Treasurer
  • Communications and Socials Officer
  • League and Development Officer
  • Welfare Officer

As well as the individual responsibilities, the committee also works together on bigger issues and projects. This includes organising and running club nights, ensuring safety and welfare of players, and club socials. More information on what joining the committee involves, and each role, is available on our website.

Members will be able to vote on the nominees for each role. The committee can also propose any additional ‘acting/shared roles’ they feel are necessary.

Benefits of joining the committee

Being on any committee will give you great experience in working with teams and this is experience you will be able to add to a CV. In return for their time, committee members attend club nights for free and receive refreshments at committee meetings.

As a committee member you’ll also be able to present your ideas to improve and shape our badminton club for the better.

If you have any questions about membership or joining the committee, you can ask a committee member for advice.

We look forward to seeing you there.
